Our Story

Johnnie and Anneke de Jong have a long family history in agriculture, but in 1999, when Johnnie came home and said he wanted to buy a herd of goats, Anneke wasn’t so sure. They didn’t know anything about goat dairying or bottling milk… Johnnie bought the goats and the creamery anyway and they went to work. The years that followed involved researching, studying and learning from experts in the field, as well as lots of hands on trial and error. From the beginning, the de Jong’s maintained a firm commitment to the health and well being of their goats, as well as providing high quality, great tasting milk for their customers.

In the late 1990’s, the market for goat milk was just beginning and there were only a handful of health food stores around. As more health food stores began opening and consumers became more conscious of the food they were purchasing, the demand for goat milk grew exponentially. Summerhill Goat Dairy continued to expand and grow. Within a decade, the de Jong’s had outgrown their small rented facility in southern California and were looking to relocate. Land was purchased in the agricultural heart of CA and a new dairy was soon under construction. The dairy and creamery were completed at the end of 2009. Johnnie said, “We work hard to be good stewards of our resources. Our new dairy was built with an emphasis on animal comfort and care, energy efficiency and providing quality, natural goat milk for our customers.”

Over the past 5 years, additional barns have been built and Summerhill Dairy continues to expand. We are committed to being good stewards of our resources and all of our building and planning is done with an emphasis on sustainability, efficiency and resourcefulness. We currently have a solar project under construction. We are excited about the opportunity to have a renewable source of power for our dairy and creamery.

We are thrilled to be bringing our delicious goat milk to more stores and customers every year. However, no matter how much we grow, our personal commitment to our goats and our customers remains the same.
